im 16, and i dropped out of high school. helpp!?

Okay I’m 16 years old, and I dropped out of highschool. I was going through a really terrible time…my sister had just died and I used drugs to help cope with the pain…I started skipping class everyday to get high and it was like a downward spiral.

I wasent addicted to hardcore drugs or anything, but being in school just wasent and isent going to work for me.

I’ve been out for a while now and I’m completly sober and doing a million times better…I’m not going to go back to school because if I did I would just fall back into my old life.

Even though I don’t get into any trouble, I can see it hurts my parents to watch me doing nothing with my life.
I’m a truant so I don’t think I can get a job or go to drivers school because my parents would get arrested if the police found out I wasent in school

So what can I do to get my life together despite the fact that I’m a truant? I want to get my G.E.D and go to realestate school, but I think you have to be a certain age and i’ve heard so many bad things about G.E.Ds like there pointless and you can’t get a good job if that’s all you have…

So could someone explain about getting you’re G.E.D, and what are the benifits of it, and how old you have to be..ect.

And if its possible to get a job when you’re still a truant?…

I guess I’m kinda asking what my options are and if you could explain them to me.

I feel like I’m still young and I can still get my life together…I’m just confused on how.

Thankss!!!

Why not do some volunteer work. It is a great way to get experience, it keeps you busy and will look great on a resume.

The best thing would be to get in touch with someone from you school- like a guidence councelor. They can tell you what’s available. When I was a kid there was an alternative school for those who for whatever reason couldn’t go to the regular one.
Aside from the obvious reasons to finish school, you’ve also run into the not so obvious one. When you’re a kid, there isn’t anything you can really do. You don’t have the age or training to get a good job, it’s hard to get any kind of job, much less one you can actually pay all your bills with: even if you could, frankly, work is really boring. School is a place to be until you’re old enough to be on your own. So it isn’t too late: get back in touch with your school and meet with them to see what you can do. And if you have no other option than to go back there, then do it and meet with someone regularly who can help you stay clean.. like a sponsor.
BTW: GED’s are not pointless. Without one (or a diploma) , you wil automatically be disqualified from jobs of any worth. Your school should have some sort of program to study for a GED.. if not check your local community college. If you really don’t want to be in school, you could study for the GED at your own rate. The good news is you are barely off track and could get to studying without much loss. Don’t delay- the older you get, the more complicated life gets and the less time you have available to get things done. Good luck.

We’d kind of need to know what state you are in… here in MI, 16 is the age in which you can drop out… so you wouldn’t be truant.

GED isn’t a bad thing… and it certainly better than nothing!

At your age though. I really would consider going back to regular school. Just ignore the drama and shit that goes on. Easier said than done, I know. Maybe if you find a new school to go to it may be easier to re-establish yourself. Make new friends, get in with a good crowd.

Be active, don’t just sit around… that can be easy if you find a good crowd and be active with them.

Night school/alternative education is an option (GED)… really I don’t think they are as bad… they just have a bad rep due to the fact that usually attendants are dropouts or ones who have been expelled from their original school. Dropouts or expelled kids more often than not have a bad history. This is also why I recommend a regular school. Get the experience you deserve. That DOESN’T mean it is bad to go there. You will still find people who also want to turn their lives around also. Just investigate it I guess.

Regardless of what you hear, you CAN get a job with a GED… you can also progress to college with a GED… all hope is not lost!

Homeschooling is another option. It requires a little more discipline as you really only will get what you want to get out of it. That applies to everything though.

Though I don’t know you, I without a doubt have confidence that you can go back to a regular school and get yourself back together.

I wish you the best of luck. Stay strong and show your family what you can do. Make them proud!

I have a sister who is almost identical to your story (with the exception of the death of a sister) (my sympathy to you); drugs, alcohol, dropout…then re-enrolled, then expelled. The epitome of a failure. She is now going back to school though. Hopefully she’ll get herself back in order just as you do!

I can sorta relate to you that you were depressed and didn’t want to go to school. My dad kicked me out my home because my step-mum dosn’t like me. I was feeling really really sad like my heart was broken and had no one to turn to and i was thinking about killing myself :( or taking heroin because it’s an anti depressant. i’m on seroqul atm for helping me sleep but it dosn’t help too much on the mood. Going to doctors in 2 days to re-evaluate. I’m not going to school atm because the depression has affected me that bad that i can’t function on a normal day. But once i’m right i intend to go back because i want a good job. you should too,

‘I’m not going to go back to school because if I did I would just fall back into my old life.’

I thought that the cause was your sisters death?

how is school your old life? Is it because you associate these people with your sisters death?school is generally the same as work but even stricter rules.

If you can’t stand people looking at you and thinking ‘the person who’s sister died’ then change school.

seriously, stay in school, ask any drug addict and he will tell you he wished he stayed in school
