Well Virginia is a lovely place in general, but according to www.likeplace.com it is Fairfax Virginia that is the best place to live for criteria like economy, environment, schools, facilities, sense of community, law & order.
References :
www.likeplace.com

Places don't become the best place to live overnight.

Tim Kaine has only been the governor since 2006.

Throughout most of it's history, Virginia has been characterized as a remedial, back-water, southern region and not very well thought of.

It has moved itself forward only recently after having been dominated by democrat governors.

Of the past 10 administrations since 1970, 5 have been Republican. Mark Warner, a Democrat, was often confused by voters as a Republican so, policy wise, you could arguably move the number to 6.

I am familiar with Charlottesville having attended seminars and taught a course in UVA and you are correct, it is an absolutely lovely place.
However, to represent it as a Democratic Party trophy is disingenuous.
References :
Live in Prince Wiliam VA

I love it. Very progressive town with a lot of great things to do, located in a beautiful area close to great hiking and camping spots. Overwhelmingly democrat... I think the democratic candidate got over 80% of c'ville votes in both 2004 and 2008.

edit to scaredy cat... There isn't a neighborhood in this town that I would be afraid to walk thru. Yes, some are a little poorer than others and there is some crime, but I have lived in some areas that were really bad and I haven't seen anything even remotely close in c'ville.
References :
Actually, it's a beautiful place to live.

And VA has a Democrat as governor because of the population of Northern Virginia which are the young preppies who work in DC.
References :
Beautiful place, Virginia. I'd love to live there too. Especially the western part of the state.
References :
It is-so long as you don't live in the ghetto side. There are sketchy, crime-ridden areas in C-ville, but if you avoid them, very little bad things will happen to you.

The retiree and professor, professional part of C-ville is gorgeous, the people are nice, there is a bunch of multicultural shops and events( C-ville is a huge refugee center) and if I could ever live there again, I would in a heartbeat. Very historical-has Monticello nearby, Civil War sites, many museums (including one of rare Aussie Aboriginal Art), and Poe's room. Also, University resources open to the public...would you not kill for your children to be able to research their school projects in one of the largest libraries in the US (Aldermann)?

The Democrat governor has very little to do with the beauty of C-Ville. Really, the Northern VA, where the primary Dem support comes from, is a wreck full of cancerous people. Southern VA is where the beauty is. The last one, Kaine, was very moderate, and he did make the state better by cracking down on illegals, telling the UN where to shove it when the UN objected on behalf of illegals, and followed the law, rather than ideals (he is anti-DP, but he signed off 8 executions in his term, exc). Ever sine Kaine went more democrat, my parents tell me that the illegals are running amuck.
Peace

justm99-My name is scaerdrys...it's a play on words in the Proto-Celtic language...I was a student...all I knew was that prostitutes were stabbed on Cherry Str, muggings happened on Grady St, and the Downtown mall was great, but stay in the lighted areas. Not saying it's anything worse than anywhere else in the country-I was just pointing out why C-ville isn't perfect. I would still love to live in C-ville again...the University wasn't offering the grad programs I wanted :(

Speaking of places with Dem Governors-how are DC, Baltimore, Boston, and Chicago doing these days?
References :
UVA 2006

small college town and a beautiful place. Home of Jefferson.

Shareef, you can't use the fact that va. has a democratic governor as a reason why charlottesville is named the best place to live. If that was the case, alexandria, arlington, springfield, richmond, etc would all be on the list.
